All students at the university are required to have

  • Three hours of first-year signature course (beginning fall 2010).
  • Three hours of composition.
  • Three hours of sophomore-level literature.
  • Six hours of U.S. history.
  • Six hours of U.S. government, including the federal and Texas constitutions.

Beyond that common foundation, all students must take social science, culture, math, and science courses, though the colleges and schools vary in their specific requirements. The College of Liberal Arts also requires

  • Six hours of social science.
  • Three hours of math.
  • 15 hours of science.
  • Six hours of fine arts and culture.
  • A major ranging between 21 and 39 hours.
  • In most cases, a minor consisting of 12 hours in one subject.
  • Elective hours to reach 120 total.

Students in the Plan II Honors program complete a parallel curriculum.

For more specific information on the more than 50 majors in the college, see http://www.utexas.edu/cola/student-affairs/Academic-Planning/Majors-and-Degrees/List-of-Majors.php.

Many academic units, including Liberal Arts, follow the university’s core curriculum. For more on the core, see Undergraduate Studies’ Web information: http://www.utexas.edu/ugs/core.
