Basic Degree Requirements

All students regardless of their declared major are required to take the following courses:

RHE 306 (Rhetoric and Writing) 

Students can register for this course in their first year based on birth month (fall = even; spring = odd; summer = open). 

Students may gain credit for RHE 306 in the following ways:

  •  3–5 on AP Language and Composition Exam
  •  600+ on SAT Reasoning Test Writing Section
  •  26+ on the ACT Writing Section
  •  Dual credit for ENGL 1301

E 316K (Masterworks of Lit: American/World/English)

  • Students can register for this course once they have credit for RHE 306 and once they have completed 30 hours of coursework.  

  • Students have the choice of taking American, British, or World literature.
  • Students may have credit for E 316K with a 4–5 on the AP Literature and Composition Exam.

American and Texas Government*:

GOV 310L (American Government)

  • Students must have 12 hours of completed coursework before registering for this course.
  • Students must take the Texas Government test if they took the AP Government Exam to earn credit for GOV 310L.

GOV 312L (Issues and Policies in American Government) 

  • Students must have completed GOV 310L (or its equivalent) and 24 hours of coursework before registering for this course.

 

*Students can also fulfill the Government requirements with the following combination of courses (UT and elsewhere):  GOV 310L & GOV 3TX; GOV 310L & GOV 3US; GOV 3TX & GOV 3US

6 hours of American History*:

HIS 315K (United States, 1492-1865)

  • Students must have 15 hours of completed coursework before registering for this course.
  • HIS 315K and HIS 315L do not have to be taken in sequence.  

HIS 315L (United States Since 1865)

  • Students must have 15 hours of completed coursework before registering for this course.
  • HIS 315K and HIS 315L do not have to be taken in sequence.  

* Students can also fulfill the American History requirement with any course designated in the Course Schedule as “partially fulfilling the legislative requirement”
